چکیده

The Atlantic blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, is a highly invasive species that poses significant threat to Mediterranean ecosystems. In the last two decades, it has become established in several marine and estuarine areas of eastern Adriatic Sea, resulting decline commercial catches damage fishing gear. This article reviews current status crab invasion Montenegro Croatia analyses its abundance population structure. Overall 619 crabs were sampled (male:female ratio, 1:1.91). Both carapace width weight differed significantly between males females, with having wider more weight. There was difference among sites. For total population, mean male female 130.3 ± 30.8 108.8 41.4 mm, respectively. addition, 187.2 85.6 132.5 39.1 g, Coefficient b at all locations, although varied females. work will also document impacts on local ecosystems provide comprehensive overview populations structures shed light this important aspect ecology.

The effects of hypoxia and pH on phenoloxidase activity in the Atlantic blue crab, Callinectes sapidus.

In its natural coastal and estuarine environments, the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, often encounters hypoxia, accompanied by hypercapnia (increased CO2) and an associated decrease in water pH. Previous studies have shown that exposure to hypercapnic hypoxia (HH) impairs the crab's ability to remove culturable bacteria from its hemolymph. In the present study we demonstrate that the activity ...

Molecular indicators of hypoxia in the blue crab Callinectes sapidus

Occurrence of hypoxia in estuarine waters is increasing, and recovery of impacted estuaries is slow. Detection of early effects of hypoxia is needed for timely remedial action to be taken. Here we examine the use of hypoxia-responsive gene and protein expression profiles in the blue crab Callinectes sapidus as early indicators of impacts of hypoxia. We cloned 23 potential hypoxiaresponsive gene...

Immune defense reduces respiratory fitness in Callinectes sapidus, the Atlantic blue crab.

Crustacean gills function in gas exchange, ion transport, and immune defense against microbial pathogens. Hemocyte aggregates that form in response to microbial pathogens become trapped in the fine vasculature of the gill, leading to the suggestion by others that respiration and ion regulation might by impaired during the course of an immune response. In the present study, injection of the path...

High Connectivity among Blue Crab (Callinectes sapidus) Populations in the Western South Atlantic

Population connectivity in the blue crab Callinectes sapidus was evaluated along 740 km of the Western South Atlantic coast. Blue crabs are the most exploited portunid in Brazil. Despite their economic importance, few studies report their ecology or population structure. Here we sampled four estuarine areas in southern Brazil during winter 2013 and summer 2014 in order to evaluate diversity, ge...

Sexual Competition Among Male Blue Crab, Callinectes sapidus.

Experiments and field data on blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, from mid-Chesapeake Bay between 1991 and 1994 were used to test whether large males have advantages over small males in accessing females and in sperm competition. In the field, large males were paired more often, especially with large, more fecund females. However, the variance in the relationship between male and female size in mat...
